Multiple storms are expected to bring heavy rain and snow to California over the next week. Parts of the Northern and Central Sierra Nevada Mountains have already received up to seven feet of snow from Sunday, January 1 through Thursday morning, January 5, with more rain and snow forecast to arrive over the next week. Snow that fell in the Sierras has boosted the statewide snowpack to 103% of normal for this date.

The atmospheric river approaching California will likely bring plenty of rain to the state, and any snow that does fall, will occur at higher elevations above 5,000 feet. Snowpack that has accumulated at lower elevations may be washed away by rain and increase the possibility of flooding. While both rain and snow are needed to help the state recover from the drought, too much rain and not enough snow means there will not be enough snowpack water content to sustain surface water demands through the spring and summer months.
