LIVE FROM THE FIELDS: Epidermal Blistering & Peeling in Desert Romaine Supplies

January 12, 2015

Please click here view a Markon Live from the Fields video about how epidermal blistering, caused by freezing temperatures, is now developing into epidermal peeling in desert lettuce items, particularly romaine.

Freezing temperatures in late December/early January caused epidermal blisters to form on desert lettuce crops

Last week’s warmer temperatures promoted growth and caused blisters to burst open and begin to discolor

Romaine and other leaf lettuce items with open heads are more susceptible to this issue, but iceberg lettuce is also affected

Operator customers can expect to see this type of defect in commodity lettuce items over the next few weeks

Additional preparation time is recommended in order to identify and remove defects that harvesting crews cannot completely avoid

The attached pictures further illustrate the type of epidermal peeling that is now being observed throughout the industry
