• Freezing temperatures in late December/early January caused epidermal blisters to form on desert lettuce crops

• Last week’s warmer temperatures promoted growth and caused blisters to burst open and begin to discolor

• Romaine and other leaf lettuce items with open heads are more susceptible to this issue, but iceberg lettuce is also affected

• Operator customers can expect to see this type of defect in commodity lettuce items over the next few weeks

• Additional preparation time is recommended in order to identify and remove defects that harvesting crews cannot completely avoid

• The attached pictures further illustrate the type of epidermal peeling that is now being observed throughout the industry
