FOOD SAFETY UPDATE: CYCLOSPORIASIS CASES INVESTIGATED IN MASSACHUSETTS
July 24, 2019
Markon continues to monitor an increase in Cyclospora infections across the United States. On July 22 the Massachusetts Department of Public Health released a notice to residents reminding them to practice safe food handling practices following an increase in reported infections of Cyclospora in the state since May 1, 2019.
There are now three states, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York, that have publicly announced they are investigating Cyclospora outbreaks in their regions, and working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other local agencies to investigate. It is our understanding both CDC and the Food and Drug Administration are working to investigate these illnesses and identify a food vehicle as quickly as possible however at this time no specific product has been identified publicly.
