FROM THE FIELDS: Wind-Related Issues in Desert Crops
February 21, 2018
The Arizona/California desert region experienced strong winds in the 30-40 mph range on Monday, February 19. Many lettuce crops are now exhibiting minor dehydration and wind damage. In particular, leaf lettuce crops are showing high amounts of dirt.
Harvesting crews are taking steps to remove as much dirt as possible, but will not be able to remove 100%. End users may need to rinse the affected product more thoroughly prior to use.
Forecasts are calling for another very windy day on Friday, February 23. Markon inspectors will be monitoring conditions and will update further as needed.
