FROM THE FIELDS: Widespread Lettuce Ice
Lettuce and leafy greens growers are experiencing significant harvesting delays in the Arizona/California desert growing region due to widespread lettuce ice. Morning temperatures dipped as low as the upper 20s in the coldest areas.
More lettuce ice is forecast for the next few days, but today’s temperatures are the coldest that we will see this week. Production and loading delays are expected as harvesting crews must wait for crops to thaw sufficiently. Plant maturity will also slow as a result of freezing temperatures on continuous mornings.
A chance for rain is also forecast for Sunday, January 6 with anywhere from .08” -.20” expected. Markon inspectors will be monitoring field conditions closely and will update as needed.
