FROM THE FIELDS: Weather-Related Quality Concerns
December 23, 2019
The Arizona/California desert growing region experienced several rain events in mid- to late November and more recently is experiencing freezing morning temperatures. Tender leaf items such as arugula, spinach, and spring mix are most sensitive to such weather events and are developing yellowing colored leaves and decreased shelf-life potential.
Lettuce items such as green leaf, iceberg, and romaine are showing some minor decay near the base of the heads as a result of the rain received and wet/moist soil not able to dry under the base of each plant. Harvesting crews are trimming heads to detect and avoid this issue, but may not be able to eliminate it completely.
