FROM THE FIELDS: VALUE-ADDED ROMAINE

September 08, 2020

An uptick in demand coupled with recent extreme heat has affected current and upcoming romaine crops and is causing a weak supply forecast in California’s Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys. Value-added romaine suppliers are being forced to trim off fewer leaves than they normally would in order to maximize yields and stretch their current fields. The goal is to give younger crops more time to mature and lessen the duration and severity of a supply shortage in the near future.

Customers can expect to see an overall darker color profile in value-added romaine salads, particularly in Ready-Set-Serve Chopped Romaine and Romaine Ribbons. Overall quality and shelf-life will also be impacted, but the best lots with the most ideal maturity are being allocated for Markon orders. Markon inspectors are monitoring quality and shelf-life closely and may implement quality-alert flyers if and when it is warranted to keep end-users informed.

Cold-chain management will be especially critical through the entire supply chain for maximizing quality and shelf-life. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
