FROM THE FIELDS: VALUE-ADDED QUALITY UPDATE

June 01, 2020

California’s Salinas Valley experienced late-season rain and above-normal temperatures in mid- to late May. Quality issues such as internal burn and mildew pressure in lettuce items have gone from intermittent to widespread throughout the industry. Although harvesting and value-added processing crews make efforts to avoid defects, they are not able to completely remove some of the internal issues currently being seem. Total defect percentages in finished packs are low, but these defects can degrade overall shelf-life performance.

Ordering for quick turns is recommended and maintaining the cold chain is critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life performance.
