FROM THE FIELDS: Value-Added Quality Update

February 28, 2018

Extended periods of cold weather and lettuce ice in the desert regions has caused frost related defects such as brittle texture, dehydration, epidermal blister, epidermal peel, elevated mechanical damage, and yellow discoloration with all lettuce and tender leaf items.

Markon has already begun finding these defects in Ready-Set-Serve and Wash and Trimmed value added items. Processors have been removing as many defects as possible. The tender leaf items such as arugula, heritage, spring mix, and spinach will typically be the most vulnerable due to inclement weather and temperature swings.

Markon inspectors are working with the individual facilities to keep product within specification as suppliers work through the most recent weather challenges.
