FROM THE FIELDS: Upcoming Rain in the Desert Region
Current weather forecasts predict a passing cold trough that will bring rain and possible thunderstorms to the Arizona/California desert growing region on Monday, November 21. This storm could cause untimely harvesting and loading delays. Both Markon and non-Markon grower/shippers are packing orders ahead today and tomorrow in anticipation of Monday’s rain. They are also planning to continue packing ahead as much as possible early next week to compensate for the observance of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 24; even a small amount of rain would hinder that goal.
Supplies of desert row crop items could become tight depending on actual rainfall totals and field conditions following the storm. Rain-related quality issues may also develop in commodity and value-added lettuce and tender leaf items.
Markon inspectors will be monitoring supplies closely and will update further as needed.
