FROM THE FIELDS: Upcoming Iceberg Lettuce Forecast in Desert Growing Regions
Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg Lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region is not available; Markon Best Available will be substituted. MFC Romaine and Green Leaf are available.
Quality issues stemming from fluctuating temperatures, strong winds, and lettuce ice have caused quality concerns that have significantly dropped palletized iceberg lettuce weights in the desert growing regions. Quality issues such as bottom rot, decay, dehydration, and weak tip have forced crews to remove outer leaves to retain the best quality and shelf-life, in some cases causing weights to dip below the MFC 46-pound minimum specification.
Current forecasts predict more cold weather next week which will further stall growth and create a demand-exceeds-supply market.
