FROM THE FIELDS: Upcoming Heat Wave in Santa Maria, California

October 20, 2017

Markon First Crop Strawberries will be limited in Santa Maria, California next week; Markon Best Available will be substituted as needed.

The Santa Maria, California growing region is expecting unseasonably hot weather in the coming days. Temperatures will be in the upper 80s to mid-90s from Sunday, October 22, to Wednesday, October 25. Tuesday, October 24 will be the hottest day with peak temperatures at nearly 100 degrees; overnight lows will also be above normal during this time.

Strawberries are very sensitive to heat. Expect berries to develop soft texture, become more prone to bruising, and decrease in size. Markon inspectors will monitor supplies and update further as needed.
