FROM THE FIELDS: TENDER LEAF QUALITY

September 09, 2020

Value-added tender leaf quality and shelf-life performance are experiencing some challenges out of California’s Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys. The recent extreme heat spikes caused some lots of arugula, spinach, and spring mix varieties to develop brittle texture and/or premature yellowing.

The industry is expecting to see inconsistent yields as well as volatile quality and shelf-life for the next three weeks, possibly longer.

Cold-chain management will be especially critical through the entire supply chain for maximizing quality and shelf-life. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
