FROM THE FIELDS: Tender Leaf Quality

February 11, 2015

Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Arugula, Cilantro, Hearts & Hearts Blend, Spinach, and Spring Mix are currently available, but may become limited; packer label may be substituted in the coming days.

Last week’s warm weather has accelerated growth and increased quality issues in many Yuma, Arizona commodity and value-added items. The following is a list of heat-related quality concerns that may develop and are expected to appear in upcoming lots.

Thin/brittle texture in some tender leaf varieties

 Mechanical damage

 Elevated respiration rates

 Higher insect pressure

 Condensation/moisture in finished packs

 Shortened shelf-life

 Yellowing leaves (particularly in arugula)

Markon’s suppliers and inspectors will continue to do everything possible to secure the strongest raw product for RSS packs. Ordering for quick turnaround is highly recommended due to the increased potential for reduced shelf-life.
