FROM THE FIELDS: Strawberry Update

November 08, 2018

California’s Salinas/Watsonville strawberry growing season finished approximately three weeks ago. It was a banner year for supply, quality, and shelf-life, with minimal arrival issues.

Orders have since shifted to the Santa Maria, California growing region for new crop fall strawberries. Quality and supply levels have been erratic at the start of the season. After a spell of rain, the area has experienced a combination of foggy mornings and warm, humid days over the past few weeks. Challenges Markon inspectors are finding:

  • Bruising
  • Decay/mold/pin rot
  • Misshaped fruit
  • Over-ripe fruit
  • Small size
  • Soft texture
  • Uneven color
