FROM THE FIELDS: Strawberries
Markon First Crop Strawberries are limited in Santa Maria, California; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.
Some growers are still culling a small percentage of strawberries that were damaged by recent rain followed by above-normal temperatures in Santa Maria, California. Overall yields remain below average, but overall shelf-life potential has increased. Quality has improved, although many lots continue to yield small-size fruit and low volume.
Temperatures are expected to remain ideal over the next several days, with daytime highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and overnight lows in the upper 40s. This will promote growth, strengthen texture, and improve flavor. The next chance for rain will be on Sunday, November 20. Markon inspectors will continue to monitor Santa Maria supplies and weather conditions and will report back as needed.
