FROM THE FIELDS: Sporadic Frost in the Desert Region
December 27, 2014
Growers in the Arizona/California desert region are reporting Temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s and sporadic frost this morning, despite windy conditions. Some areas are affected more than others, so harvesting start times will range from 8:30-10:30 AM (MST).
The most significant freeze of the winter growing season so far is expected to occur tomorrow morning, Sunday, December 28 due to calm, clear, and dry conditions. Moderate-to-severe lettuce ice is expected which will begin to have immediate effects on quality of mature crops and will also slow plant growth in younger crops.
Markon inspectors will be monitoring field conditions and quality closely in the coming days and will update further as needed.
