FROM THE FIELDS: Southern California Rainfall
More rain is coming to the Oxnard, California growing region. Approximately 0.43”-0.50” are expected between today and tomorrow, January 5. Conditions will be dry again Friday, January 6 through Sunday, January 8. A stronger system is forecast to bring another 0.70” on Monday, January 9.
Strawberry supplies in the Oxnard region have been heavily impacted by a steady succession of rain events over the past several weeks. Current forecasts for the month of January suggest this pattern will continue. Although the rain is most welcomed in the area, it’s short-term effects on strawberries have increased quality concerns and decreased overall supplies. The following rain-related issues have been and will continue to be difficult for harvesting crews to avoid for at least the next three weeks:
- Bruising
- Decay
- Shortened shelf-life potential
- Tight supplies
- Water damage
- Wind damage
Markon inspectors will be monitoring the impact of these latest rain events and will update further as the situation unfolds.
