FROM THE FIELDS: Severe Lettuce Ice in the Desert Region
February 23, 2018
High winds in the Arizona/California desert growing region are ushering in another wave of cold temperatures this weekend with a slight chance of rain this evening. Moderate-to-severe lettuce ice is expected tomorrow (Saturday, February 24) with less severe ice following on Sunday and Monday (February 25 and 26).
Harvesting and loading delays for all desert row crop items are expected; lettuce crops in particular will continue to develop freeze-related issues such as epidermal blister and peel . Plant growth will slow down as a result of the colder soil temperatures.
