FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Tender Leaf Items

August 16, 2018

Markon inspectors have observed sporadic quality issues in tender leaf items such as arugula, spinach, and spring mix. Recent warm days and nights have accelerated growth and caused brittle texture. Some finished packs are exhibiting elevated mechanical damage or fines after processing. Shelf-life performance may be impacted.

Temperatures have been cooler this week, but will rise again leading into the weekend. Inland temperatures may reach into the mid-80s to low 90s while coastal temperatures will remain in the low 70s. Cold-chain management will remain critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life.
