FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Temperatures

August 16, 2019

California’s Salinas Valley has experienced another warming trend due to lingering high pressure systems over the past week. Coastal temperatures have been in the upper 70s to low 80s, but the most Southern reaches of the Valley have climbed as high as 100 to 106 degrees.

Sporadic heat-related quality issues have been observed in lettuce and other Salinas row crop items; shelf-life may be affected. Some lettuce crops are also exhibiting inconsistent density, resulting in lower Markon case weights.

Temperatures will fall over the weekend, but will rise again starting the middle of next week. These temperature swings experienced over the last few weeks may cause yield and quality/shelf-life concerns in upcoming fields.
