FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Quality Update
July 20, 2018
California’s Salinas Valley growing region has experienced warm, humid weather over the past two weeks that was preceded by heat spikes in late June. In addition to the warmer daytime highs, the overnight low temperatures have also been above normal. These conditions are causing the following defects to develop in some lettuce and tender leaf items:
- Fringe burn
- Growth cracks
- Insect pressure
- Internal burn
- Long core/seeder
- Mildew pressure
Current forecasts are calling for temperatures to remain slightly above normal for the next 7-10 days. Markon inspectors will continue working with shippers to select the best lots available.
