FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS VALLEY QUALITY

May 20, 2020

California’s Salinas Valley has experienced volatile weather over the last 14 days. Temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s combined with isolated showers have caused industry-wide quality and shelf-life concerns in commodity and value-added items. Some lettuce and leafy greens products are exhibiting:

  • Decay
  • Fringe burn
  • Internal burn
  • Mildew and mildew damage
  • Premature pinking, yellowing, and shortened shelf-life in value-added items
  • Rib blight

Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to obtain the best quality available for Markon orders.
