FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Lettuce Items

August 27, 2019

The Salinas Valley has been experiencing abnormally high temperatures and humid conditions since mid-last week, and is forecast to have these weather conditions through early next week. High temperatures and humidity will cause industry-wide quality issues in lettuce and leaf items such as:

  • Increased insect pressure
  • Mildew damage
  • Rib blight
  • Seeder (long core)

Growers will be packing in younger fields to avoid/minimize these defects; light weights and lower yields are expected over the next 10 to 14 days as these conditions continue.

Markon First Crop Premium Iceberg and Romaine will be limited.
