FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Heat Spike

June 20, 2018

Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine, as well as MFC Strawberries are available.

California’s Salinas Valley is expected to experience temperatures in the upper 70s to low 90s between today and Saturday, June 23. Although Markon inspectors have seen sporadic internal burn issues in some iceberg and leaf lettuce items, overall quality has been very good and is expected to hold through this brief heat spike. Although strawberries will be monitored closely for any signs of soft texture or sunburn, temperatures will be cooler in the coastal areas where berry production is taking place.

Growers are starting harvesting crews earlier in the morning to maximize production before peak temperatures are reached. The high temperatures and longer days will promote growth in most Salinas Valley vegetable crops before temperatures return to cooler, seasonal norms starting next week.
