FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS VALLEY BROCCOLI

September 09, 2020

Commodity and value-added broccoli packs from the Salinas Valley are exhibiting heat-related issues such as hollow core, brown bead, and pin rot in all packs, including value-added broccoli florets. Harvesting and processing crews are working to reduce or avoid severe defects, but may not be able to eliminate them completely due to the high percentage of crops affected.

The most recent heat spike that occurred September 6-7 will likely keep supplies tight for the next few weeks as growers see a decrease in overall yields.

Cold-chain management will be especially critical through the entire supply chain for maximizing quality and shelf-life. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
