FROM THE FIELDS: Salinas Valley Ash Update

August 01, 2016

Please click here  to view a Markon Live from the Fields video about ongoing ash concerns in California’s Salinas Valley.

  • The Soberanes Wildfire north of Big Sur, California has now burned over 40,000 acres and is only 18% contained
  • Higher amounts of ash are now being observed by Markon inspectors in some parts of the Salinas Valley, particularly in leaf lettuce crops that have open heads (see attached photos)
  • Markon inspectors are also on alert for potential spikes in animal intrusion as the fire might force insects and/or wildlife away from the mountains and closer to farmland
  • Over 5,000 firefighters are battling the blaze that has destroyed 57 homes so far and may not be fully extinguished until late August
  • Ash from wildfires is not considered a food safety hazard, but additional rinsing may be needed to remove it from commodity and some lightly processed lettuce items at the end-user level
