FROM THE FIELDS: Romaine Quality

March 22, 2018

Markon First Crop Romaine is limited; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.

Recent unfavorable weather in both the Arizona desert and Central California growing regions has had a significant impact on romaine lettuce in particular. A two-week cold snap in late February was followed by a warming trend in the desert as well as a series of rain storms in California’s Central Coast and San Joaquin Valley growing regions (where spring harvesting is just getting underway).

Markon inspectors have observed the following defects in current commodity and value-added packs:

  • Bottom rot
  • Dehydration
  • Discolored epidermal peel with and without decay
  • Fringe burn
  • Increased insect pressure
  • Internal burn
  • Shortened shelf-life potential

Harvesting and processing crews for various romaine items are working to reduce defects, but they won’t be able to completely eliminate them.
