FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys
California’s Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys have received a series of storms that began Tuesday, March 20 and continued through today, Thursday, March 22. The San Joaquin Valley’s Huron growing region has already received approximately 1.25 inches of rain and is expected to receive an additional 1.25 inches today.
Growers began packing limited supplies out of Huron towards the end of last week, but the rain from this week has forced many to cancel harvesting today, for the second consecutive day in a row, as field conditions are too muddy for crews and equipment.
More growers will make their way towards the San Joaquin Valley next week before making their final move to the Salinas Valley in April.
With the heavy lettuce ice in late February and recent rain, Markon inspectors have already begun to observe and expect to see an increase in the following defects:
- Bottom rot
- Discolored epidermal peel with and without decay
- Dirt/mud
- Premature pinking
