FROM THE FIELDS: Rain-Related Quality Issues
May 28, 2019
California’s Salinas Valley received approximately two inches of rain over the past week.
Markon inspectors are reporting internal burn and mildew pressure in iceberg and romaine lettuce, and water damage in strawberries. Overall shelf life performance is expected to be below normal over the next 10-14 days due to the recent rain and humid conditions.
Another quarter inch of rain is forecast for Sunday, May 26th, which will perpetuate the quality and shelf life challenges. Maintaining the cold chain and ordering for quick turns will be critical for maximizing quality and shelf life.
