The Arizona/California desert growing region began receiving rainfall overnight that will continue throughout the day and into Tuesday, January 27th. The Yuma region could record up to .75 inches, and the Coachella region may get .35-50 inches. Moderate production delays can be expected over the next two days due to poor field conditions and harvesting crews taking extra measures to keep commodity lettuce cartons as clean and dry as possible.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring quality closely for any and all of the following rain-related issues that may develop in lettuce and tender leaf items:

• Bottom rot

• Decay

• Mildew pressure

• Premature pinking

• Shortened shelf life

The Oxnard, California growing region is also expected to receive showers this evening and into Tuesday, the 27th. Growers are packing ahead in anticipation of the rain which may cause another round of water damage and reduced yields in strawberry supplies from that region as well as potential shelf life concerns in tender leaf items such as cilantro. Markon will continue to update as needed following this passing storm.
