FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Desert Growing Region
Late last night and into early this morning the first rain system moved through the desert growing regions of Yuma, Arizona and the Imperial Valley, California bringing up to 0.15”-0.30” of total rain fall. Another system is expected to move through the region tonight and into tomorrow morning with the possibility of another 0.25” of rain.
Many growers packed ahead yesterday in anticipation of the rain and muddy conditions. No cancellations have been reported but some crews will be delayed up to 3 hours. The crews will be working to keep the product as clean as possible, but some mud may be present in the finished packs.
With these most recent low pressure systems another wave of cold weather and possible lettuce ice is expected early next week, Tuesday, January 3rd to Friday, January 6th. Current forecasts have daytime lows in the upper 50’s and nighttime temperatures in the upper 20’s and low 30’s. Markon Inspectors will be monitoring the fields and working with suppliers to pack the best product available.
