FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Arizona/California Desert Regions

December 22, 2016

A series of low Pacific troughs are expected to bring multiple rain storms and heavy winds up to 45mph over the next several days. The Yuma, Arizona and Imperial Valley regions are forecast to receive .25” of rain tonight with another 1.25” expected to fall tomorrow, December 22. Another storm system is expected to move through the desert regions on Saturday, December 24, potentially bringing another .30”-.40”.

Many growers have packed ahead of schedule in anticipation of the rain. Depending on actual rainfall totals, significant harvesting delays or cancellations may occur tomorrow due to poor field conditions.

Supplies of green leaf and iceberg items could become tight through the weekend. Rain-related quality issues may also develop in commodity and value-added lettuces and tender leaf items.
