FROM THE FIELDS: Quality Issues in the Desert Growing Regions
February 22, 2017
Recent strong winds and heavy rain have caused an increase in dirt in commodity and value-added items. Higher-than-normal temperatures have increased insects.
- Dirt in the heads, most notable with the leaf lettuce items, are being found by Markon inspectors
- An increase of black fly and green aphid is being seen; however, counts are low at this time and within specifications
Suppliers are trimming products and washing with chlorinated water, but these issues cannot be fully removed. Markon inspectors will continue to monitor quality and field conditions closely and work with growers to select the best lots available.
