FROM THE FIELDS: POOR HARVESTING CONDITIONS

January 21, 2021

The Arizona/California desert growing region experienced significant rainfall yesterday, resulting in harvest delays or cancellations with most leafy greens suppliers. Steady rain continued through the night with upwards of 1.30” received so far and a small chance for more showers today.

Current field conditions are extremely challenging with wet and muddy terrain that will cause more harvesting delays or cancelations, and loading delays. Suppliers will be working to keep boxes as clean and dry as possible, but some dirt/mud can be expected in commodity and value-added items such as broccoli, lettuce, and tender leaf items. The radar snapshot below was taken overnight during the peak of rainfall in and around the Yuma area.
