FROM THE FIELDS: Persistent Lettuce Ice in the Desert Growing Region
February 19, 2019
This morning’s ice in the desert growing region will cause two-to-three hour production delays today. Overnight temperatures dipped into the low 30s; harvesting crews will not start packing until 10:00-11:00 AM (MST). Warmer weather is expected by mid-week, but sporadic frosts may still occur in some areas.
Most crops are exhibiting epidermal blistering and frost-damage; however, leafy lettuce items such as romaine and green leaf are more susceptible due to their open frames.
