The major California growing regions, including the Salinas Valley, Santa Maria, and Oxnard, continue to receive temperatures 25 degrees above the seasonal norms. Daytime highs in the mid- to upper 90s to low 100s and warm nights in the mid-60s have caused industry-wide, heat-related defects in commodity and value-added items.

The Watsonville/Salinas strawberry growing season is winding down, while the Santa Maria harvest is starting to pick up. Due to the recent heat wave, both growing areas are experiencing decreased yields, mildew/mold issues, and pin rot.

Cold-chain management throughout distribution is a critical part of maximizing the quality and shelf-life of perishable produce items. Ordering for quick turns is also recommended.
