FROM THE FIELDS: Passing Showers in Salinas and Santa Maria, California

May 08, 2015

Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries will be limited for the remainder of the week in the Salinas/Watsonville and Santa Maria, California growing regions; Markon Best Available or packer label will be substituted as needed.

The Salinas/Watsonville and Santa Maria, California growing regions have received intermittent rain showers throughout the day totaling less than .1 inches. Harvesting crews packed ahead of schedule in anticipation of the rain, but some crews had to stop harvesting early.

Rain-related issues such as increased bruising, soft texture, and sporadic water damage are expected to develop over the next few days. Harvesting crews will be stripping damaged berries from the plants through next week, resulting in lower yields. Operators can expect shorter shelf-life in berries shipping from the above-mentioned growing areas this week. Cold-chain management and ordering for quick turns are recommended.

Markon Inspectors will be monitoring field conditions and quality closely and will report back with any further information.
