FROM THE FIELDS: More Upcoming Frost in the Desert Growing Region

December 08, 2015

Markon First Crop Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine Lettuces are limited; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.

After a slight warming trend with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s, the forecast is predicting another cold front to move through the desert growing regions. By Friday, December 11, daytime temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-60s; freezing morning temperatures are forecast through the weekend. The week of December 14 will receive the coldest temperatures thus far, as another cold front brings more lettuce ice and a slight chance of rain.

Markon Inspectors are already seeing some frost-related quality issues, such as dull appearance, epidermal blisters, wilted inner leaves, and yellowing leaf tips. These defects are expected to compound once the next two cold fronts move through the area.

Markon Inspectors will be monitoring supplies and reporting back with further information as it becomes available.
