FROM THE FIELDS: Minor Harvesting Delays in the Desert Region
Morning temperatures dipped into the mid-30s in the colder parts of the Arizona/California desert growing region on Sunday, January 21 and again this morning, causing lettuce ice to develop on some crops. Most crews harvesting desert row crop items will start approximately one hour later than normal. Temperatures will increase slightly over the next few days, but more ice and delays could occur.
Most ready-to-harvest crops won’t have any immediate effects from lower temperatures, but the upcoming crops that are a few weeks from peak maturity may be more affected in terms of growth rate and/or quality.
