FROM THE FIELDS: Mildew Pressure in Salinas, California

April 11, 2016

Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg Lettuce is unavailable. MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine packs are limited; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.

Recent fluctuating temperatures, increased humidity, and rain showers experienced in California’s Salinas Valley are causing an industrywide spike in mildew pressure in lettuce and tender leaf items. Markon inspectors are reporting mildew or mildew damage in many commodity lettuce fields as well as in raw product supplies of spring mix and spinach.

Current forecasts call for a brief dry period before another small chance of showers that could bring .20” inches of rain on Thursday, April 14. This late-season front will include cold winds, dropping morning lows into the mid-30s to low 40s on Friday and potentially cause frost in some parts of the Salinas Valley.

Expect lower case weights and pale color in commodity packs as harvesting crews will remove as many of the damaged leaves as necessary. Markon inspectors are monitoring field conditions, supply levels, and quality and will update as needed.
