FROM THE FIELDS: MILDEW PRESSURE IN THE DESERT REGION

February 15, 2021

After a long stretch of exceptional quality and high case weights, lettuce crops in the Arizona/California desert growing region experienced a sudden and widespread spike in mildew pressure towards the end of last week caused by warm, humid conditions. Iceberg lettuce has been the most impacted, but romaine and green leaf are also exhibiting occasional mildew and mildew damage.

Harvesting crews are trimming heads down to detect and avoid as much mildew damage as possible, which is resulting in some pale color and lower case weights. Markon inspectors are working with commodity and value-added suppliers to select the best lots for Markon orders and will continue to update as needed.
