FROM THE FIELDS: Light Rain in the Salinas Valley

October 17, 2016

California’s Salinas Valley began receiving light rainfall yesterday evening that continued off and on through the night. A heavier rain is expected this afternoon with more scattered showers through Monday morning, October 17th. Most shippers have already packed ahead in anticipation of the rain, but will be taking measures to keep cartons and commodity products as clean and dry as possible. Less-than-ideal field conditions are expected to cause some harvesting and loading delays today.

  • Lettuce and tender leaf items may develop rain-related defects in the coming days such as:
  • bottom rot
  • decay
  • mildew
  • premature pinking in some value added items

A slight warming trend is forecast for the week of October 17. Markon Inspectors will be working with growers and processors to select the best fields available and will update once the effects of the rain become more clear.
