FROM THE FIELDS: Light Rain in California Growing Regions

October 20, 2017

California’s Salinas and San Joaquin Valley’s received light rainfall overnight. Totals received ranged from as little as .02 to .15 inches and will likely cause only minor harvesting delays. The rain will help with plant growth, but the overall erratic weather pattern throughout the month of October is already impacting quality and shelf-life for lettuce and baby leaf items grown in these regions.

As the growing season winds down, cold chain management and ordering for quick turns will be critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life of perishable produce items.
