FROM THE FIELDS: Light Lettuce Ice in the Desert Region

December 08, 2017

Early morning temperatures dipped into the mid-30s in the Arizona/California desert region, causing sporadic lettuce ice to develop in some fields. Harvesting operations will be delayed 1-2 hours or until crops have thawed sufficiently.

Widespread lettuce ice is forecast for Saturday, December 9 and again on December 20-21. Apart from causing minor dehydration in lettuce crops, plant maturity will be slowed down due to cooler ground temperatures.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring commodity and value-added supplies closely and will update further as needed.
