FROM THE FIELDS: LETTUCE QUALITY UPDATE

December 04, 2020

Growers in the Arizona/California desert growing region will experience significant harvesting delays again this morning due to cold temperatures and moderate-to-heavy lettuce ice. Some harvesting crews may not start production until 11:00 AM (MST), which will lead to loading delays. More ice is expected tomorrow, but forecasts call for a return to above normal temperatures next week.

Commodity lettuce items exhibited excellent quality and improved case weights in the Arizona/California desert growing region this week, but after several consecutive mornings with temperatures in the 30°s and varying levels of lettuce ice, a gradual decline in quality and/or appearance is expected in the coming days.

The attached photos depict Markon First Crop lettuce items packed earlier this week and the lettuce ice that is being observed this morning. Markon inspectors will be monitoring fields closely and working with suppliers to allocate the best product for Markon orders.
