Parts of the Salinas, California growing region have received light, sporadic lettuce ice over the last two days due to early morning temperatures in the mid-30s. Some harvesting crews have been delayed up to an hour.

Forecasts are calling for another chance of lettuce ice tomorrow, Saturday, April 4, followed by a cold front with a chance for up to a tenth of an inch of rain on Sunday, April 5 and half an inch on Tuesday, April 7. Temperatures will remain below normal with the possibility of sporadic ice in colder areas through most of next week.

The light lettuce ice is not expected to cause any immediate or lasting quality issues in lettuce crops, but plant growth may be slowed, potentially affecting case weights and/or creating a minor harvesting gap in the near future. The attached pictures taken this morning illustrate the level of ice on leaf lettuce crops.
