FROM THE FIELDS: Lettuce Ice in the Desert Region
December 30, 2019
Temperatures in the Arizona/California desert growing region dropped into the low to mid 30s this morning, causing widespread lettuce ice and harvesting delays of up to four hours. More lettuce ice is expected tomorrow, Sunday, December 29, with possible rain Monday, December 30.
The recent cycle of rain and cold temperatures will be affecting quality, shelf-life, case weights, and yields for lettuces and other desert row crops for the next two to three weeks.
