FROM THE FIELDS: Insect Pressure in Salinas, CA

May 03, 2016

Insect pressure continues to be a concern in most commodity and some value added lettuce and tender leaf items throughout California’s Salinas Valley due to abnormal weather patterns over the last several weeks.

Harvesting and processing crews are doing everything possible to reduce or eliminate insects, but some lightly processed value added items such as Ready Set Serve (RSS) Washed & Trimmed Better Burger Leaf have recently exhibited sporadic insects in finished packs despite passing through its normal wash process.

Insect pressure is expected to subside soon as weather stabilizes. Until then, Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to select the best lots possible.
