FROM THE FIELDS: INCONSISTENT ICEBERG LETTUCE WEIGHTS

September 14, 2020

Markon First Crop (MFC) Trim and Palletized Iceberg Lettuces are limited; Markon Best Available (MBA) will be substituted as needed.
Residual defects from last month’s heatwave are being felt across the industry. The smoke and cooler temperatures have slowed, or frozen, head development; yields are low which has been exacerbated by diseases caused by hot weather and increased insect activity. Inconsistent head density and heavy trimming by crews will cause inconsistent weights over the next 7 to 10 days.

Markon Inspectors are seeing industrywide heat-related defects such as:

  • Bottom rot
  • Decay
  • Delayed maturity and inconsistent density
  • Growth cracks
  • Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus due to increased insect activity
  • Insects and insect damage
  • Internal burn
  • Russet spotting
  • Seeder/long core
  • Weak tips
